# Welcome!

This documentation is to try and give as much information to each section as possible while keeping it short. If it's overly technical I will try embed a short video.

As One on one support between me and your business is a premium option and not available to everyone for budget restrictions i still dont want to leave people stuck after purchasing the software, but as the community has grown i cannot serve non paying support customers on a one on one basis.&#x20;

{% hint style="info" %}
Below is a list of videos to watch in order of how you should do things.
{% endhint %}

## Main Tutorial Video

# Contact Me / Paid Support

Contacting me directly for support / consultation from my business to yours is a paid option.

### Why is support paid?

To keep the cost of the software as low as possible and give as many people as possible the tools to build a competition website to potentially scale to hundreds if not millions in revenue, my time is an optional extra.

### Free Support

Well you are currently looking at it! I have spent a few weeks bringing together as much information as possible to hopefully get you up and running asap.&#x20;

That being said, the template is a starting point and is not all things to all people and I recommend you keep your website as SIMPLE as possible. A new feature as you launch the business will not be the difference - your marketing and product offering will.&#x20;

Also don't forget you have unlimited access to all the videos i've created over the years and don't forget googling and learning what you need for the DIY Project.

# Quickstart

Getting Started quickly!

This section is brief and lacking information by design. If you need to know more about aspects i cover in this quickstart guide you will find them in this documentation.&#x20;

First you will need a company domain name for example "**big-comps.com"** these can be purchased at [namecheap.com](https://www.namecheap.com/) or any other domain registrar.

### Create a server

You will need a server to host your website. This basically a computer that runs 24/7 that allows your customers to connect to your website from anywhere in the world.

To create a server head over to [breezywp.com](https://breezywp.com/), make an account and then click the blue button to create a server. I recommend SVR2.

<figure><img src="https://3757828083-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2F-MkRdwoQGMPqgCGEecsX%2Fuploads%2FlwUieDL4NsmsSmexHFrh%2Fimage.png?alt=media&amp;token=ea666c6b-fd33-46bc-a982-aa17b02e0036" alt=""><figcaption><p>Create Server</p></figcaption></figure>

<figure><img src="https://3757828083-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2F-MkRdwoQGMPqgCGEecsX%2Fuploads%2F3rS904NOxnA8fxle8TB0%2Fimage.png?alt=media&amp;token=759a0cd9-27b1-4447-999b-679223720ca8" alt=""><figcaption><p>Name your server anything you would like, SVR2 is a good starter size and select a location closer to you.</p></figcaption></figure>

### Create your website

Once your website has been built & ready, click into your server and "Create Site".

<figure><img src="https://3757828083-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2F-MkRdwoQGMPqgCGEecsX%2Fuploads%2Fq7rat5SPgAMTDM5liRFB%2Fimage.png?alt=media&amp;token=5b1b7b4e-c57e-44f6-b6eb-a1513108ead5" alt=""><figcaption><p>Create Site</p></figcaption></figure>

In the popup add your domain name for example **"yourdomain.co.uk"**

**Do not add - "[www](http://www)." or "http" just the above layout, everything else will be added for you.**

Once you create click create website - leave it to work its magic for around 3-5min until clicking on it under "current sites"

### Connecting your domain to your server

In the first step on this quick start guide you purchased a domain name. You will now have to navigate your way to the DNS settings in this domain and create an "A record" that points to the server IP Address, copy your address from the server page on breezywp.com. &#x20;

<figure><img src="https://3757828083-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2F-MkRdwoQGMPqgCGEecsX%2Fuploads%2FyUraEnpxo3UlTo2Zzld4%2Fimage.png?alt=media&amp;token=e8bbc696-8492-4556-a399-918dd859ef5c" alt=""><figcaption><p>Copy your IP Address</p></figcaption></figure>

Next add the following "A Record"

* Type: "A"
* Host: @
* Value: "Your IP Address"

You can also add another "A Record" for "[www](http://www)." should you want it to redirect to your non [www](http://www). domain.

* Type: "A"
* Host: @&#x20;
* Value

### Test Your Website

Before moving on its time to test your website. Type your domain name into your web browser and if you see the following screen, you are good to go!

<figure><img src="https://3757828083-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2F-MkRdwoQGMPqgCGEecsX%2Fuploads%2FziPsQLYTqLZoOuAFP38x%2Fimage.png?alt=media&amp;token=90152b65-54c4-46ad-b1ac-26821c801ad5" alt=""><figcaption><p>Default Wordpress Home Screen</p></figcaption></figure>

### Finishing up.&#x20;

To finish up, lets quickly secure the website with an SSL certificate, head over to breezywp.com website and click "Install SSL" and choose Automated. This will take a few minutes to complete so give it time before requesting another certificate.

<figure><img src="https://3757828083-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2F-MkRdwoQGMPqgCGEecsX%2Fuploads%2F9nKl1uiUWlFjOLMQtiO2%2Fimage.png?alt=media&amp;token=de5c1492-2588-4077-ad82-3280ee1d7e12" alt=""><figcaption><p>Install SSL > Automated</p></figcaption></figure>

# BreezyWP & Hosting

Hosting your website is something everyone needs to do but you need to choose between hosting it on either BreezyWP.com (My own hosting company) or another provider.

### Using BreezyWP

Using breezyWP.com is the simplest option that will result in the least amount of unknowns and issues as the template is fully tested on the servers we use.&#x20;

Creating A Server to host your website

* Create an account at breezyWP.com
* Create a server by clicking top right blue button while on the dashboard.
* Name your server (Anything will do, its for your record just)
* Server Size should be at least SVR2 to get started and increase as traffic comes in. Please get in touch to increase your server size.
* Location should be the closest to your customers. Usually London.&#x20;

Once Your server has created this can take 15 min), create your website.&#x20;

* Click into your server by clicking on the name and then click the "Create Website" button
* Add your domain name in - this should be "example.co.uk" ONLY. You do not need to include [www](http://www). Then create website.&#x20;
* Wait for 10 min while the website creates on the server.&#x20;
* In the meantime copy your IP Address that's listed on your server page and create an "A Record" on your DNS settings within your domain registrar. (Your registrar could be godaddy, namecheap, 123-reg etc) if you need help locating your dns records to add the IP address as your registrar for support.&#x20;
* Once added you will need to wait until the change gets picked up by the internet.
* From there you can check your domain name on your browser. (google chrome, firefox etc)

Once the default wordpress home screen appears you are ready to go onto the next. if it does not after an hour or so please check your DNS settings are correct.

### Self Hosting

If you would like to use the template on your own hosting provider that is no problem, see the next article "Installation" once you have a fresh wordpress install setup on your hosting partner of choice. &#x20;

# Domain Name

Every website needs a domain name and a server!

### Whats a domain?

A domain is a business identifier that allows your customers to find your website on the internet. These can be rented indefinitely from a few pounds per year.&#x20;

### Where can i get one?

You can purchase a domain name from the following:

* cloudflare.com
* namecheap.com
* 123-reg.co.uk

The list is endless but cloudflare seems to be the cheapest.

### Linking to your website

Your domain has whats called "DNS Records" these control everything from your website to email. But to just link your website you just need to create an "A Record" that points to your server IP Address. Should you be using Breezywp.com this is all that's required.&#x20;

# SSL Certificate

HTTP -> to -> HTTPS!

### What are they?

They are certificates that create a secure connection between you and the website.&#x20;

### Are they mandatory?

Certificates are mandatory when dealing with user data and real money transactions. But they are so simple these days to implement that you should always add one.&#x20;

### How much do they cost?

Free thanks to Let's Encrypt.

### How can I add one?

&#x20;If you are hosted on breezywp.com you can simply add one by following the steps below:

1. First you **MUST** have your website visible on your domain name that you want to add an SSL certificate to. If you cannot see it on "*<http://yourdomain.com>*" it will not be able to verify your ownership and will **FAIL**.
2. Navigate to your website on Breezywp.com -> Server -> Website
3. Click install SSL&#x20;

<figure><img src="https://3757828083-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2F-MkRdwoQGMPqgCGEecsX%2Fuploads%2FWj8AHO7iAJK2Fpz4nkG6%2Fimage.png?alt=media&amp;token=fbb5099f-b5ed-47c9-af7c-926a11cc0cbc" alt=""><figcaption><p>Install SSL </p></figcaption></figure>

4. 99.9% of people should choose **Automated.** If you are using cloudlfare or bringing your own custom SSL then you can choose custom.
5. Click Install and give the application around 3-5min to request and install your SSL certificate for you.&#x20;

<figure><img src="https://3757828083-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2F-MkRdwoQGMPqgCGEecsX%2Fuploads%2F9dPPP8KcL6XUAl9qjdqO%2Fimage.png?alt=media&amp;token=e42eacc3-e209-434b-be2f-d7bdb14c0eed" alt=""><figcaption><p>Successful SSL Certificate Install.</p></figcaption></figure>

# Dates & Extending Comp

## <mark style="color:red;">DO NOT RELIST</mark>.&#x20;

This deleted all ticket numbers and starts fresh.&#x20;

### Min Tickets

Before thinking about extending a competition - the competition first needs to fail. To fail you have to sell less than your minimum tickets.

In the image below you must sell below 100 tickets to have the option to extend the competition as per your terms and conditions.

<figure><img src="https://3757828083-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2F-MkRdwoQGMPqgCGEecsX%2Fuploads%2FWyj5KK0WASZkFfpdiBJU%2Fimage.png?alt=media&amp;token=da35fb05-a3ce-42b6-b721-4de626c116e1" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

### Extending the draw

Once the draw has ended and failed - you can relist - and pick new dates. then Update the product.

Copy the above competition product settings.&#x20;

# Categories

Product Categories change where your product is displayed on the website.

* Live
* Completed

This is the most simplistic and default setup of moving competitions around your website. Either on the homepage (live) or on the completed page (completed). This works well for websites with anything under 12 active competitions at once. Anything beyond this Id recommend following the below guide on how to divide your competitions into more categories such as draw dates (Today, Tomorrow, Future, Sale etc) or more traditional product categories such as electronics, cash etc.

### Adding more categories

Adding more categories to divide up your competitions to make your website easier to navigate for your customers.&#x20;

### Segmenting your prizes

Bulk uploading CSV's can be done but you will need to use google sheets (sheets.google.com) - this is due to excel exporting CSVs and transforming characters like "£" into special charaters and making the import fail.

# Fix: Pages Not changing

A css conflict is stopping your pages changing on the entry list. Here is how to fix.

### How to fix:

* Navigate to theme options in the admin section and then to "custom code"

<figure><img src="https://3757828083-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2F-MkRdwoQGMPqgCGEecsX%2Fuploads%2FcOOK1f9io82sS7YIuVNy%2Fimage.png?alt=media&amp;token=1424c737-c0b1-4854-9e22-7f7926191517" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

Scroll down and find ".current" in the "custom CSS" Section.

<figure><img src="https://3757828083-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2F-MkRdwoQGMPqgCGEecsX%2Fuploads%2F3JBlukrirPfe7o8nUdM2%2Fimage.png?alt=media&amp;token=4777db49-9edf-47c6-8cd4-168a40f83aa4" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

Change this from **".current"** to **".home .current,.product .current"** or delete all together if you are using the updated progress bar.&#x20;

It should then looks like this:&#x20;

<figure><img src="https://3757828083-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2F-MkRdwoQGMPqgCGEecsX%2Fuploads%2FAof72QrYq9O8T3EOnT7z%2Fimage.png?alt=media&amp;token=9f924763-7cc8-4797-b76e-bf1d82afa52a" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

# Email Accounts

Business emails are important for looking professional. Namecheap has a simple solution of privateemail.com

### Take a look at the below video on how to get setup.

{% embed url="<https://privateemail.com/>" %}

{% embed url="<https://youtu.be/7kX_FtE3hQ8>" %}

# UK Banking

I have no personal affiliation with these banks and currently dont hold an account myself.

### What Banks work with competition websites?

* <https://www.zemplerbank.com/> formerly cashplus.com

### What type of company should i choose?&#x20;

When signing up to a business account, these banks will want you to choose a business category - people in the past have told me that the following category is the one to use:

> **93290 | Other amusement and recreation activities n.e.c.**

All the above information is not from personal experience but working with businesses in this sector.

# Payment Gateway

A secure & high risk payment provider is required to take payments on your website.

### What to know

* It's important to understand you can only take payments from the UK and Ireland.
* You need to have setup and registered either as a limited company or sole trader
* You **cannot** use Stripe, paypal (in the first two years) when they find out you are they block and freeze funds which can ruin your business.&#x20;
* You will need a [business bank account](/business-setup/uk-banking) for payments to be deposited into.&#x20;
* Payouts are made to your bank usually daily as a lump sum of all the payments made on your website.
* Below is a video on how to signup and setup the high risk payment gateway

### Video

# Terms and Conditions

I am not a solicitor.

### Important

I am a web developer, **not** a solicitor, so I cannot provide specific legal advice. However, I can guide you towards the appropriate resources to help you reach your own informed conclusion.

### **The Solicitor Route**

You can hire a solicitor such as david walker at gridlaw\.com - he can give you a template to fill in and then sign off on the website once you have added the terms and conditions.&#x20;

### Making your own

If the above is not feasible you can always do research into publicly available terms and conditions make draw up your own. &#x20;

# Social Media

Facebook can make up almost 90% of traffic to your website, make sure you add a "get tickets" button to your facebook page.

{% embed url="<https://youtu.be/t8PSfSerdbM>" %}

### Key Takeaways

Setting up and running a competition website in the UK involves creating a compelling social media presence that resonates with your audience and adds an element of fun to the experience. To achieve this, consider the following key points:

1. **Engaging Content**: Share engaging and relatable content on your social media platforms. This could include teaser posts about upcoming competitions, behind-the-scenes glimpses, and user-generated content showcasing participants' excitement.
2. **Regular Updates**: Keep your social media accounts active with regular updates. Consistency in posting content will help maintain your audience's interest and keep them informed about upcoming competitions and news.
3. **Interactive Posts**: Encourage interaction with your audience through polls, quizzes, and interactive stories. Engaging posts that invite comments, likes, and shares can help boost your online presence and foster a sense of community among participants.
4. **Visual Appeal**: Use high-quality visuals, such as images and videos, to make your social media posts visually appealing. Eye-catching graphics and videos can help convey the excitement of your competitions.
5. **Transparency**: Be transparent about your competition's rules, terms, and conditions. Address any questions or concerns promptly and publicly to build trust with your audience.
6. **Prizes and Rewards**: Highlight the prizes and rewards participants can win in your competitions. Make them visually enticing and share stories of past winners to inspire others.
7. **Hashtags**: Create and promote unique hashtags for your competitions. Encourage participants to use these hashtags when posting about their experiences, making it easy to track and share user-generated content.
8. **User-Generated Content**: Encourage participants to share their own experiences and content related to your competitions. Repost and acknowledge user-generated content to show appreciation for your community.
9. **Live Streams and Stories**: Use live streams and stories to provide real-time updates, announcements, and even live draws for winners. These formats can create a sense of immediacy and excitement.
10. **Humour and Memes**: Incorporate humour and relatable memes into your content where appropriate. Fun and light-hearted posts can make your brand more relatable and enjoyable.
11. **Community Building**: Foster a sense of community among your followers by acknowledging their contributions and creating a space for them to connect and share their passion for your competitions.
12. **Feedback and Surveys**: Seek feedback from your audience through surveys and polls. This not only shows that you value their opinions but also helps you improve your competitions and social media strategy.

In summary, creating and maintaining a successful competition website in the UK involves leveraging social media to engage your audience, build a community, and infuse a sense of fun into the experience. By consistently sharing relatable and exciting content, you can enhance your brand's appeal and attract enthusiastic participants.

I myself dont specialise in social media advertising as its not my strong suit, i am just the web developer.&#x20;

# Redis

Make your website faster

### What is redis?&#x20;

Redis is a tool we can use to speed up your website, reducing the need to always ask the database for information where we can store that information in "redis". Its much faster and efficient.

### Install

Head to add plugin - search for redis and install "Redis Object Cache" and activate

<figure><img src="https://3757828083-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2F-MkRdwoQGMPqgCGEecsX%2Fuploads%2FdnlhQcWJoulurH0daNx0%2Fimage.png?alt=media&amp;token=0f2f42e5-5562-46f5-a9ad-4a8da5e8ff1c" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

### Activate

You should be directed to the following page. If you are using breezywp servers - redis will be installed on your server so you can just click "enable object cache"

<figure><img src="https://3757828083-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2F-MkRdwoQGMPqgCGEecsX%2Fuploads%2FpfGPaHqXelgZn461B06u%2Fimage.png?alt=media&amp;token=2b20dabf-6dd8-47f2-a1ca-cd6d9dc7e858" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

### All done

Your website should now be noticeably faster and handle lots more users at once making the most of your server.

<figure><img src="https://3757828083-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2F-MkRdwoQGMPqgCGEecsX%2Fuploads%2FMAkGrLdOQV28fHKz1Qtj%2Fimage.png?alt=media&amp;token=532f5f40-52be-4178-9885-45ef915b6924" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

# Caching

Simply add a caching plugin such as WC Total Cache or one you like in the plugins section if you wish to add. IF some out of date info is being displayed then you can clear that cache.&#x20;

# Indexing

Database indexing is advanced

There is a plugin that helps called "Index WP MySQL for speed" - this is already applied by default on the latest version of the template but can help older ones

<figure><img src="https://3757828083-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2F-MkRdwoQGMPqgCGEecsX%2Fuploads%2FEfsGOGHpJaXAss7gmTls%2Fimage.png?alt=media&amp;token=3a2e3580-2f97-47af-a769-d8ab396a710f" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>
